Our story

The Eastman Heritage Story

After the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln, America entered a period of great innovation. Manufacturing advanced rapidly, the first Transcontinental Railroad was completed, and Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.

In Burlington, Iowa in 1876, traveling salesman Henry W. Chittenden introduced the Square Mattress brand—promoted as “the cleanest, most healthful, and most luxuriant mattresses ever made.”
In 1883, Edward P. Eastman, a young bookkeeper, became Chittenden’s business partner, and Chittenden & Eastman was founded.

Under Chittenden’s leadership, the company experienced substantial growth, manufacturing 120 different lines of mattresses and upholstered furniture, including the now-iconic Eastman House line. In 1942, Chittenden stepped down as president, and the final member of the Eastman family sold his shares to company employees.

Although the founders had moved on, their legacy of innovation and quality endured. In 2007, Eclipse International purchased Chittenden & Eastman’s intellectual property and reintroduced the Eastman House brand to a global market.

Today, Eastman House continues the founders’ tradition of craftsmanship, precision, and integrity. The company’s philosophy remains unchanged: “It takes time to make a great mattress.” Eastman House would rather perfect a product than rush production—combining old-world artisanship with modern technology and sustainable materials.

Headquartered in North Brunswick, New Jersey, Eastman House operates thirty factories worldwide, serving as a global leader in sustainable luxury mattress production.

The Eastman Heritage Line

Eastman Heritage represents the pinnacle of the brand’s tradition. The line reimagines Eastman House’s most luxurious and meticulously crafted mattresses, redesigned and refined to create the company’s most exclusive collection. Each mattress—its fabric, height, and firmness—is the result of extensive research and an understanding of the evolving affordable-luxury market.

Signature features include cooling gel layers, toxin-free foam, plant-based latex, recycled coil-on-coil construction, and silk permatufting—each component chosen to enhance durability, comfort, and sustainability.
